Overview

The Latin Quarter is one of Paris's oldest districts, located on the left bank of the Seine spanning the 5th and 6th arrondissements. Named for the Latin language spoken by medieval scholars, it transformed from a Roman settlement called Lutetia into Europe's premier intellectual hub after the founding of the Sorbonne in 1257, and later became the epicenter of the 1968 student uprising.
